Often when we think of the necessities of life, or the essentials if you prefer, we think of things like:  Air, Water, food, shelter from the elements, etc., but what about God’s forgiveness?  We never really think about that, but I want us to today.

What Is Needed For Life? Faith, Repentance, Forgiveness

Text: Luke 7:36-50, “Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”  And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”  So he said, “Teacher, say it.”   “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”  Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”   And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”  Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”  And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”  Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.””  nkj

This is all about living with guilt that’s too heavy to bear.  It is about forgiveness, freedom and liberty that allows our soul to take flight.

The encounter with the woman is VERY small.  It is the commentary of Jesus that helps us to see into the human soul. The Pharisee is the heart of self-righteous man who doesn’t realize he needs forgiveness and that others are welcomed by God to seek forgiveness any time.

The woman had everything she needed for life – at least we would assume so.  She even had a bottle of expensive perfume that could have been sold IF $$ were the problem.  But that wasn’t the problem.  It seems there was something else missing in life.

This woman lived some kind of lifestyle that was known to these people as being undesirable – sinful.  So much so that they didn’t even want her to touch them.  Guilt was HEAVY – a crushing load on her soul.

She comes to Jesus and hears words that we all want to hear:  “Your sins are forgiven.” “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

But how can we hear these kinds of words when we are full of sinful thoughts, desires, words, and actions?

This woman lived a sinful life yet she was able to hear them.  How come?  Jesus said it was her FAITH.

What was her FAITH? – She sought and saw Jesus and poured out her soul without words in ways that demonstrated contrition and devotion.

Contrition – weeping / washing / wiping/ drying.  She knew that only Jesus could grant her forgiveness.  She knew that HE was her only hope.  Jesus – the Messiah, the anointed one of God, the Son of God – HE could forgive her.

Devotion – fragrant perfume.  Jesus you mean more than this bottle of perfume that would cost a year’s salary.  It is kept for the wedding day, but you, oh God, are more valuable to me than ANYTHING!

She didn’t care who was there or who saw her.  Without God’s forgiveness her life was hopeless, helpless, meaningless, of no value to her.  For this reason, she was going to see Jesus and get what only He could give – Forgiveness for her soul.  She receives it because of her faith demonstrated by her actions.

It is all about living with guilt that’s too heavy to bear.  It is about forgiveness, freedom and liberty that allows our soul to take flight.  One of the necessities that turns existence into True LIFE!

When we think of the necessities of life, we need to think beyond:  Air, Water, food, shelter from the elements.  We need to recognize God’s forgiveness is necessary for LIFE!  Without this, other things that we clamour for lose their importance because life itself can only have value from knowing that there is peace in your soul no matter what else goes wrong.

Not only do we need to receive it, but we need to be Christ-Like and give it and point those we meet to the Heavenly Father who can grant eternal forgiveness to their souls.  We were once in their shoes.  We heard His voice forgive us – we need to grant it as well!

Let’s Perfect Our Vision by Being Christ-like and being a Light.
