What is Condemned

Text:               John 3:16-18, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.  18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” nkj

Jesus is love and peace.  He called us to go out and tell everyone everywhere who He is and what He is about – salvation through Him.  Sometimes we forget that it isn’t “a better lifestyle” we are sharing – although it does produce that.  It isn’t “an alternative”.  The Jesus that we share and testify to is Salvation:  The Way; The Truth; and The Life.  What we forget sometimes is that WITHOUT:  The Way; The Truth; and The Life you only have a Dead End Lie that leads to DEATH.

The whole reason Jesus came was so that life COULD be possible.

Listen again to HIS words from our text:  “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.  He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

CONDEMNED.  That is a pretty strong word.  We don’t really like to hear it, especially when we speak of eternity.  Maybe that is what sparked one of those following Jesus while He was teaching to ask a question about how many would be saved.  We find the conversation in Luke 13:23-27.

“Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?”  And He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, I do not know you, where you are from,’ then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’ There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out.”  Nkj

Jesus tells us that many will try to enter but won’t be able to because it is a narrow Gate – Jesus Himself. ONE single gate.  Knowing about Him isn’t sufficient.  Being around Him and His teaching isn’t sufficient.  Jesus said it was BELIEVING in Him that makes the difference.

It isn’t about DOING stuff.  Ephesians 2:8-9 makes that clear: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”  Nkj

Romans 10:9 gives us an explanation of what that faith looks like: “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”  nkj

You CONFESS what you BELIEVE.  We must believe the story of Jesus and then confess that HE is LORD – the one in charge of our lives from now on.

It IS a serious situation and so we must be open about what we believe because JESUS IS the only answer.

When you are waiting for a rescue and one arrives, you don’t refuse it.  If you do, you perish.  It isn’t cruel, it is reality.  The world is lost and dying in sins of its own making.  We were separated from the Love of God and fellowship with Him, so He sent His son to take the punishment for our sins.  THAT is the lifeline – the rescue.  He is there for you.  If you refuse HIM there is no other.  It isn’t cruel, it is reality and THAT is why Jesus spoke so much about it and why He asks us to tell others about it too.

Conclusion:

The Jesus that we share and testify to is Salvation:  The Way; The Truth; and The Life.  Without Jesus you only have a Dead End Lie that leads to DEATH.

What could possibly stop you from saying “Yes” to Jesus?
